Introduction

The artists, selected from various branches of art, are engaged in novel experiences with the aid of sound, music, and image. Given their different artistic backgrounds, these artists have been treating the same mediums quite differently. As someone in charge of selecting these works, my original intention was to manifest the different results emerging from the usage of the very same mediums. However, my main concern here was not to appraise or put value on these works of art but rather to observe the role of sound and image and how each artist used the two elements together. In other words, implementing sound and image unaccompanied by any sort of narration or storytelling, reveals the artist’s endeavour to best utilise the materials of sound and image. It is noteworthy that excluding narration and storytelling here does not impair the process. On the contrary it gives the audience more time and possibility to delve deeper into these works and develop their own interpretation. Eliminating the unnecessary elements may indeed turn the attention of the audience to the main intentions of the artist.

Concert (Curated by Hassan Sheidaei)

Mise En Abyme

Where are the borders of our perception and do our senses really represent reality? In the
video installation “Myse en Abyme” the medium becomes the object and represents itself.
The music decomposes synchronous to the image into its individual parts, which again
consist of the whole composition. How reality is displayed to us, is not necessarily what its
true nature is. If we want to look beyond our perception, we can see how the world around us
consist of smaller parts. But we cannot exit our subjective view into an objective reality and
therefore, we will eventually end up again in our limited representation of reality.

Renovations on the Mothership

Musicians: Liz Allbee, Korhan Erel, Liz Kosack

In “Renovations on the Mothership”, light scans over a living subject in an approach that feels
both gentle and somehow sinister. Although its purpose is unclear, it moves carefully to probe
and re-shape the film’s subject by disassembling her figure into estranged parts. Within this
abnormal space, music co-exists as a composition of synthetic, atmospheric, and melodic
sounds, all of which modify with the light. The figure’s illuminated parts suspend amongst all-
encompassing darkness, where neither a sense of gravity nor orientation appears to occur.
