Phantasma No.1 – Oud and Fixed Media

Oud: Yasamin Shahhosseini

“Automaton” is a moving mechanical device made in imitation of a human being that performs a range of functions according to a predetermined set of coded instructions. From the Victorian era, these robots were used to please royal families. The musical models are usually accompanied by pleasant music that prevents you from hearing their inner turmoil (the sound of gears). In this piece, I tried to imagine the musician and his/her instrument in the place of an automaton; several few movements which causes sounds to be created automatically and sometimes out of control and also the relation between the musician and his/her prepared instrument which works like a machine. And finally, this time, the narration of the inner world of these inanimate human beings. The resulting sound of vibration of the rulers on the strings causes uncontrollable and automatic noises, and it has also been used to simulate the technique “riz” in the oud instrument, without the direct intervention of the musician. Because of the importance of the gears in this concept, I used a broken bicycle chainset to record the needed sound for the electronic part.

Prevalent

The first ideas of the piece came up around July 2021, when in Iran, most people were involved with sickness and death horrifyingly. The Covid19 virus was spreading widely, and depression felt to be unstoppable. The disappointment was prevalent. In this era, I start imagining having a form in which the idea of small objects from double bass sound is widespread in the timespan. Besides, I have been sketching patches that sound “stretchy” which, seek to imitate the gestures meaning “spreading.” Stretchy also means shorten that can be a little light at the end of the tunnel.

The Unconsciousness Hall – Bass and Fixed Media

Contrabass: Matthias Bauer

This piece reflects the inner atmosphere of the composer. It reflects the human unconsciousness. It’s a journey as we pass the level of consciousness and entering into deeper layers. Every sound that has been used in fixed media are recorded by composer and there is not any synthesized sound and all of sound sources are natural. In the score section there is an effective approach. In order to this, a new system of notation has been invented to support the idea. Overall, both Tape and acoustic part would create an atmospheric pad, this confrontation is one of most important goal of this composition. Although player role is very important as there is adlib approach.

Resurrection

Switching between two different atmosphere with two different sonority shows us the ending of the world and then awakening of the world again. first is the real sounds which go to silence and second one is electronic sounds which go to tension. there is an element in the piece that invites listener to think deep and think about the resurrection. this element is the long hit  with outh accent that their continuous and their place in the specific parts can do this role.

Wet Explosion – Bass and Fixed Media

Contrabass: Matthias Bauer

This piece has three parts, it is a sound coming from three random shapes on my palette, on the day I wanted to paint. There were only three shapes on the palette, and this piece sounded from nothing, from silence, from painting — a silent medium. The three shapes were a circle, an ascending line, and scattered dots. It was as if the stages of an explosion, in sheer silence, were before my eyes and in my ears: the circle grows, the fire rises, and at last a scattered gray band remains: a whimper at the end of the world.
